Breaking Bad is an American television drama series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. The show was broadcast in the United States and Canada on the cable channel AMC between January 20, 2008, and September 29, 2013. This show follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who also works at a car wash with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), manufacturing methamphetamine to provide for his family when he learns he has terminal cancer. Breaking Bad is a significant departure from the show's original concept. In interviews, Gilligan has highlighted the influence of Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest", Frank O'Hara's "A Cool, Dry Place", John Steinbeck's "East of Eden", George Pelecanos' "The Turnaround", William Faulkner's novel "As I Lay Dying" and Paul Thomas Anderson's film "There Will Be Blood". The show's initial stage of development began in 2004, when Gilligan was attached to a script for a feature film adaptation of the Mexican show La Quinceañera that would have starred Kate del Castillo. Gilligan previously worked with Cranston on the FOX series Malcom in the Middle. The series is broadcast in the United States and Canada on the cable channel AMC and is a production of Sony Pictures Television. It premiered on January 20, 2008. The show will make its UK premiere on Netflix on October 11, 2013. Breaking Bad was acclaimed by critics throughout its five seasons, particularly for its writing and cinematography as well as the performance of Cranston and Paul, who were both nominated multiple times for several awards (including three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and two Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama, winning once). "Breaking Bad" was named the outstanding drama series of 2008 by the American Film Institute during their awards ceremony in January 2009. The series also received nine nominations at the 68th Golden Globe Awards in 2009, including Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama for Cranston. The pilot episode broke records in terms of viewership, becoming the most-watched basic cable drama series telecast in history with 2.9 million viewers. It also garnered 1.6 million viewers in Britain seeing it on Netflix which is also a record, accounting for three percent of all people watching television at time of broadcast. According to "Variety", the series was watched by 316.6 million viewers all around the world, which "notches it among television's biggest draws".
