This book is one of the earliest vampire novels which was published just after the publication of Frankenstein. The book has been translated into many languages including English, French, German, Italian and Japanese. With its close proximity to Romania there are similarities between this novel and "Dracula". Dracula is written in the form of a diary or journal of Jonathan Harker which he kept during his visit to Count Dracula's castle. The story starts off with Jonathan Harker who is an estate agent from Yorkshire in England, leaving for Transylvania to meet his client who happens to be Count Dracula. He travels by train and then crosses over into Romania on horseback. His first encounter with the Count Dracula was at his castle which was located about three miles away from Bistritz. The count welcomed him with hospitality and invited him to stay the night at his castle. At this point he stays at the Count's castle for a total of about three weeks. Harker is a very superstitious man and feared that the count was a vampire. He kept a diary or journal which was later published in "Dracula" by Bram Stoker in 1897. The book was then published in 1912 with additional information about the background of the characters and also some extra details which were not present in his original diary. In one of the entries, Harker said that he made attempts to read from a book written about vampires but it has been proven to be an unreliable source of information due to its inaccuracy. In the book he also said that there were some coachmen who refused to go on further with their trip because of the stench of dead animals and carrion which they claimed was a smell that Count Dracula created himself. Dracula is an undead creature who is considered a sociopath. He has a very long lifespan and also has certain powers at his disposal which enable him to influence people's minds. Once a person is bitten by a vampire or drinks the vampire's blood they become vampires themselves after dying. According to Transylvanian folklore, he turns into a bat at around 12 pm which enables him to escape the sunlight by flying up into the sky. He also has the ability to influence people's subconscious thoughts and alter their dreams. The story is set in Count Dracula's castle which is located in a country called Transylvania. Through a series of letters, Prof. Van Helsing gathers the information about Count Dracula and his habits from several different sources including Jonathan Harker, a visitor from England who met him at his castle in Romania (Count Dracula). Van Helsing then goes to England and attempts to save Lucy, who he believes is under the influence of this vampire because she had been bitten by him.
